Monken not happy with USM’s mental toughness

Southern Miss football coach Todd Monken was not at all pleased with what he characterized as a lack of mental toughness during the Golden Eagles practice session Sunday morning.

“We had a lot of guys who fell out today, so we’ll have to be better (Monday),” Monken said. “I know it’s hot, I know the heat index is hot, I know we have to take care of our bodies.”

But for the ones who pushed through the 2-hour, 45-minute practice in 98-degree heat in the first day of shoulder pads, Monken had high praise.

“The guys that made it through, the energy and body language, was great – unbelievable,” Monken said. “For others, for whatever it was, whether it was what they did coming into camp or what they have been doing lately, in getting their rest at night, it wasn’t good enough.”

USM will return to Joe Park Practice Field for camp’s fourth practice at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

The Golden Eagles kick off the season at 6 p.m. Aug. 31 against Texas State at Roberts Stadium.
